Hyde Park is a historic neighborhood located in central Austin within the boundaries of 38th Street, 51st Street, Guadalupe, Duval, and (north of 45th Street) Red River. This charming, quaint neighborhood is a throwback to days gone by. Almost every home has a front porch with either a swing or other inviting porch furniture. Some of the homes even have wrap around porches. The homes are mostly bungalow style with distinctive wood sidings and decorative screens on the windows. Some of the older, more ornate homes have beautiful trim work. There are majestic trees on every street. When I drive into this neighborhood I automatically slow down and turn my head from side to side just to take it all in. Time seems to have stood still here. It’s hard to believe that the land this neighborhood now occupies was once home to the State Fair of Texas from 1875 until it was moved to Dallas in 1884. Hyde Park has its very own neighborhood post office, gym, fire station, a museum, the Elizabeth Ney Museum, a small neighborhood grocery store and a few neighborhood eateries – Hyde Park Bar & Grill, Mother’s, Asti and Quack’s Bakery. The neighborhood also has one of Austin’s much-praised municipal golf courses, Hancock Golf, on East 41st Street was built in 1899 and is the oldest golf course in Texas. The proximity to The University of Texas makes this neighborhood a great choice for students and professors, and any other individuals who value a true sense of community.
